Working with
an EAP
Professionals who operate EAPs require the support of experts in the field of addiction treatment and mental health care. A trusted relationship with a specialist center can streamline processes when these services are required. An EAP is a staff benefit to manage work-related stress and recommend alcohol or drug abuse treatment. The services provided are free to employees and are tailored to individual needs. EAPs offer outside counselors, referrals, and resources such as education and self-help groups to help staff and their family members with confidential care.
Absolute Confidentially
Confidentiality restrictions are due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, which require complete confidentiality between the third-party EAP provider and the employee. The HIPAA rule applies to any health institution that manages confidential information digitally and was implemented by the US Department of Health and Human Services to safeguard personal health information. It also sets limits and conditions regarding what is done with this information without the patient’s permission.
The regulation gives the patients rights over their own health information, including the right to who sees and shares records or is permitted to make changes to them. HIPAA-compliant substance abuse treatment facilities are required to comply with the privacy rule, and Psyclarity Health has the relevant accreditation and administrative systems in place to meet this need. This is an important step in ensuring complete confidentiality when choosing the right partnership with a facility.
Providing Support for Drug and Alcohol Abuse Disorders
Most Employee Assistance Program services are connected in some way to addiction treatment and mental healthcare. They either directly or indirectly address stress, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, co-occurring disorders, financial concerns, family issues such as divorce or parental responsibility, and legal matters. EAPs offer a specified number of free sessions — generally one to three — to assess the employee’s issue before recommending a service, counselor, or resource.
While many EAPs are unlikely to provide long-term counseling, they are well-positioned to direct an employee to the services that would be able to help them with their needs in the long run. In such cases, Psyclarity Health has specialized facilities for appropriate care and welcomes collaborations with referral specialists seeking qualified assistance. This is specifically targeted at professionals who require private, patient-centric addiction treatment.
Employee Wellness
Benefits
While it is not mandatory for companies to have an EAP in place, the benefits are tangible to both employees and employers. In many cases, it is possible to resolve a problem before it becomes a crisis. This can be valuable for individuals who may be in danger of making company-damaging choices, for instance, safety-sensitive transportation workers whose drug and alcohol abuse would contravene Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Corporate Benefits Include:
- Increased Productivity
- Improved Office Morale
- Fewer Accidents
- Less Absenteeism
- Better Staff Retention
EAP
Trends
- 50 years of EAPs
- 79% of employer implementation
Employee Assistance Programs have evolved in the 50 years since they were first implemented. In that time, protocols have become far more progressive, and as many as 79% of employers in the US now offer an EAP. Although EAPs can be established in companies with as few as five employees, many companies with less than 25 staff members do not have one in place. In most instances, this is due to the fact that they are not aware of the perks of offering EAP services or do not know how to set one up. However, the trend is growing, both in the US and globally, as companies take note of the importance of caring for the education and mental wellness of their teams. Psyclarity Health has an extensive understanding of the requirements and regulations of EAPs and can assist you in setting one up for your company.
EAP Referral
Types
There are various ways in which employees can access an EAP service. In some instances, the individual may choose to seek out assistance for themselves, either via phone or online. In other cases, a friend, colleague, or relative may suggest that the employee makes contact, or they may reach out to the EAP service themselves. An employer or HR department may be concerned about the employee’s performance and recommend that they access the EAP’s services rather than compromise safety-sensitive functions if they have an alcohol or drug abuse issue.
Sometimes, referrals may arise after issues come to light following performance evaluations, disciplinary hearings if rules have been broken, or other legal procedures. In these instances, it is important to implement the process as outlined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
These processes include:
Pre-Screen - Screening to confirm addiction and evaluation of the severity of the problem
Intervention - Brief intervention by the SAP to counsel the patient about the issue
Referral - Referral to treatment to assist the patient in the recovery process
Psyclarity Health’s administration program allows you to move smoothly through this process. Once these steps have been completed, Psyclarity Health is available to seamlessly provide any necessary substance use education and mental health treatment.
Care
Options
Upon admission, referring professionals can expect the care team to undertake clinical assessments, provide an evaluation, and offer appropriate treatment plans.
Psyclarity’s treatment plans and facilities have proven to be highly effective for treating drug and alcohol addiction.
After assessment, medically assisted modalities may be implemented, followed by a patient-centric program of evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Patients are helped to identify causes for their substance abuse problems, as well as taught life skills to manage stress and cope with issues that often trigger a relapse. These skills give a higher chance that the professional meets the necessary requirements to successfully face follow-up tests.
Certified Employee Assistance Professionals
(CEAPs)
Certified Employee Assistance Professionals (CEAP) offer counseling and support to staff members and their families through a range of job-related and personal issues. While there are numerous benefits attached to the role, the designation brings with it many responsibilities. With this in mind, a CEAP’s tasks are enhanced by developing associations with certified professionals in behavioral and mental health fields for when referrals are necessary.
Psyclarity Health has developed strong working relationships with many CEAPs, offering advice and specialized care for any employee whose needs run deeper than basic counseling or therapy. With this in mind, if you are a CEAP, you are welcome to make contact with the Psyclarity team to see how the centers’ services can be of benefit to you and your patients.
EAPs for
Employees
Although an Employee Assistance Program may seem like yet another expense for a company, it can be well worth the investment. Starting an EAP shows how invested you are in your employees’ health and well-being.
It is also particularly important for safety-sensitive functions, where company policies are required to meet standards for public safety, such as Department of Transportation dot drug testing rules and alcohol regulation.
In these instances, an EAP provides a published alcohol policy and information on drug abuse. In fact, the role of qualified substance abuse professionals is not simply to enforce employer substance abuse policies but to provide education on drug and alcohol safety. Once the employee returns, the EAP facilitates follow-up testing to ensure they meet the criteria provided for public safety.
However, in many instances, neither the employer nor the substance abuse professional monitoring the EAP may have all the skills necessary to offer specialized care. Partnering with an experienced inpatient and outpatient rehab center, such as Psyclarity Health, means that employees can be assured of specialist substance abuse treatment with the best possible chance of long-term recovery. Here is where you will appreciate Psyclarity’s experience in helping your company create its own EAP.
