Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops after exposure to life-threatening or highly traumatic events. Due to the nature of military duty, it is not surprising that many active military members and veterans suffer from PTSD.

Many veterans and service members experience debilitating long-term symptoms of PTSD, including anxiety and paranoia, flashbacks, nightmares, and even hallucinations.

Triggers can take many forms, making it difficult to resume regularnormal civilian life. This results in numerous avoidance techniques, with many active service members and veterans resorting to drugs and alcohol to numb the symptoms of PTSD. These escalate into substance use disorders, effectively compounding the problem, and can be seen in the use of substances such as:

  • Alcohol addiction
  • Opioids and opiates
  • Prescription medication
  • Illicit substances

Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol abuse is the most commonly diagnosed problem, both among veterans and active duty service members. Alcohol use can quickly lead to addiction, which comes with many other physical or psychological problems. Since it’s easily available, alcohol is often underestimated as an addictive substance. However, some veterans suffering from alcoholism require inpatient treatment and addiction medication to safely manage withdrawal symptoms.

Opioids and Opiates

Opioid abuse is more commonly seen in the military than in the general population. Addiction may start on the battlefield when prescription painkillers are administered to manage the pain of those injured during combat. Ultimately, chronic pain may lead to opioid dependence, which also requires carefully managed addiction treatment.

Prescription Medications

Anxiety disorders and dysfunctional sleep patterns are common among veterans. Many will require prescription medications such as Ativan, Valium, Ambien, and Xanax to help with symptoms of anxiety and insomnia. These medications have a high risk of addiction and can quickly evolve into a substance use disorder.

Illicit Drugs

While alcohol is readily available, and opiates and prescription medication may become a problem after being prescribed for valid medical issues, some veterans may also turn to illicit drugs as a coping mechanism. These drugs, such as cocaine, marijuana, meth, ecstasy, and hallucinogens, are not only illegal but also dangerously addictive. Using them regularly has serious effects on a person’s mental and physical health, and also impacts their career and personal life.

Learning the warning signs of drug abuse and how to seek help are the first steps on the road to recovery. Partnering with an experienced rehab facility like Psyclarity Health gives you the right tools to identify and assist those who have developed substance abuse problems.

Overcoming the
Stigma

The military culture puts stock in strength, self-reliance, and teamwork. This leads to veterans believing that they will be seen as weak or a failure if they admit to struggling with substance abuse, drug addiction, or a mental health condition. While numerous veterans may need assistance, or even drug and alcohol rehab, many never seek treatment due to these stigmas. Even the simple belief that they may encounter prejudice is enough to stop many from asking for help.

At Psyclarity Health, our goal is to help overcome the stigma so that our veterans and military personnel can get the help they deserve.
