What Is Detox Like?

For most people, after intake, the first step is a medical detox, to help the body detoxify and to give your system time to adjust as the harmful substances are cleared from the body. Brain chemistry and bodily processes are often seriously affected by long-term substance use, so detoxing is often synonymous with withdrawal symptoms.

Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the type of drugs and/or alcohol that were being used and whether you were using more than one substance at the same time. They also vary depending on the severity of the physical dependence on the substance. If you were using cocaine casually, for example, the withdrawal symptom would be much less severe than if you had been drinking alcohol heavily for ten years. Some people do not require medical intervention and medications, while others may need intensive acute care while detoxing to stay safe from dangerous symptoms like high blood pressure, dehydration, seizures, and delirium tremens.

When you speak with us before you begin your detox, our expert doctors, nurses, and other care providers will ensure you know what to expect. They will be with you 24 hours a day as your body recovers. You will also have access to counseling, and if you have been diagnosed with a co-occurring mental health disorder like depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or anxiety, you may also receive psychiatric care and medications to ease symptoms.

At Psyclarity Health, we aim to keep you comfortable in our welcoming and supportive treatment center. We utilize trauma-informed methodologies to ensure you feel listened to and cared for. This is a vulnerable time for many people, and our team will do all we can to be there for you, answer your questions, and keep you healthy as you detox safely.

As detox varies from person to person, you may opt to detox in our treatment center without the use of any prescription medications. Our onsite clinicians will still monitor your progress as you live within the walls of the treatment center, ensuring you stay safe and feel comfortable. This way, you will be inside a completely sober environment surrounded by strong support, with a medical team standing by in case withdrawal symptoms change suddenly. You will be removed from all temptation to abuse drugs & alcohol, without needing to worry about your health and safety.

What to Expect During Drug Detox?

During the inpatient acute treatment service program at Psyclarity Health, you will live inside our comfortable and safe treatment center 24 hours a day, day and night. We offer modern, cutting-edge technology and medical care, including rehabilitative medications and therapies. Our board-certified doctors, licensed nurse practitioners, and master’s level psychiatrists will be there at all times to monitor your blood pressure, temperature, respiration, heart rate, and fluid levels, making sure the body does not go into shock or produce withdrawal symptoms that are dangerous to your health. During withdrawal, the symptoms vary from person to person, depending on the types of substances you were using. Common drug withdrawal symptoms include:

    • Feeling like you have the flu

    • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps

    • Shaking hands or full body tremors

    • Body pain, with aching joints and muscle spasms

    • Headaches

    • Uncontrollable sweating

    • Mood swings and agitation

    • Insomnia and nightmares

    • Changes in mental health that may include psychosis, hallucinations, anxiety, or depression

    • Drug cravings that can feel impossible to resist

Along with monitoring symptoms, our medical team may also prescribe you medications to make this difficult period easier. You may receive short-term prescriptions for medications including:

    • Benzodiazepines to help regulate the nervous system, treat anxiety, and help with sleep

    • Clonidine to help with cramping, muscle aches, sweating, and anxiety

    • Baclofen to treat muscle pain

    • Zofram to help manage nausea

    • Acamprosate to help normalize brain chemistry during alcohol detox

    • Chlordiazepoxide HCL to treat anxiety, insomnia, and other withdrawal symptoms

Methadone or buprenorphine helps the body wean off opioid drugs slowly and safely over a longer period, often lasting months or even years, for a safer and easier transition into rehab and beyond

These medications are given in low, FDA-approved doses that will not produce any pleasurable effects, and their use is closely monitored by a doctor so they will not cause a new addiction to form.

The length of your detox program will depend on your unique body chemistry, as well as the substance(s) you had been using, and the level of addiction severity you are dealing with. Those with co-occurring mental health conditions may find their detox also takes longer. You will not be “on the clock” when you enter detox at Psyclarity Health. We will ensure you are medically stable and ready to move forward in treatment before you start rehab. Your health and safety are our top priority, and we will also make sure you feel ready to move forward into the next step of your treatment plan: inpatient rehab.
